Restaurants: Noah’s: Small plates with big flavors

After hitting several North Fork wineries on a rainy Sunday morning, Jay and I needed some fortification before hitting several more. Being by the ocean, we knew we wanted to eat seafood, so we decided to try out a newish small plates seafood-oriented restaurant called Noah’s in Greenport.

Noah’s is an airy, open, modern-looking space with fish prints on the walls that inspired us to eat as much fish as we could. We started with the local Pipes Cove oysters. Unfortunately, they were a little thin and briny, not plump like the Widow’s Hole oysters (Pipes Cove’s neighbor) that we enjoyed at BLT Fish in Manhattan a couple years ago.

Next we tried the BBQ’d Local Oysters (which also turned out to be Pipes Cove), which were quite disappointing. They weren’t exactly grilled, as we had expected, but arrived at a lukewarm temperature and topped with a dollop of barbecue sauce.

Things started picking up from there, however, with the Grilled Sardines with Piquillo Peppers, Lemon Aioli, and Basil, served on toasted bread. The flavors were well-balanced and the sardines juicy.

Next came one of Noah’s specialties, the Crab-Stuffed Deviled Eggs. The eggs were topped with a not-stingy amount of crab and were very tasty.

The Long Island Clam Chowder with Steamed Local Littlenecks was really yummy – the clams in particular were sweet and plump – but I thought the chowder was a little too much cream and not enough other good things.

The Crescent Farms Duck BBQ with Smoked Cheddar Polenta was one of the meal’s highlights, the tanginess of the barbecue sauce tempered by the smoky polenta and the tender duck.

We ended with the S’mores Pot de Crème, a delectable dish with caramelized marshmallow fluff on top, a rich chocolate pudding underneath, and graham crackers on the side for scooping it all up.

We would definitely return to Noah’s after a day of wine tasting. The prices were rather reasonable for the area and, while not all of the dishes hit the mark, the ones that did made our stop more than worthwhile.
